24 August update: what matched TVET applicants should do next

The official NESRI TVET page reports more than 1.3 million applications, 160,000 young people matched, over 73,000 enrolled and N13.98 billion disbursed. Being matched means the system has connected an applicant to a training route or centre. It is not a reason to pay an agent.

• Use only the official TVET portal or message channel to confirm your centre and trade.
• Check that your name, phone number and selected trade match your application.
• Ask the assigned centre for the resumption date, attendance rules and required documents.
• Do not pay a WhatsApp contact for matching, stipend release or a training slot.

For online training, the official Digital Training Academy currently states that 32,000 free learning licences are available through Coursera and Pluralsight. The TVET and digital routes are separate, so choose the route that matches the work you want to do.

Two free federal training routes are open to Nigerians right now, one for practical trades and one for digital skills.

The Federal Ministry of Education is currently promoting two different routes. The TVET Initiative teaches hands-on trades such as solar installation, computer repair, fashion, carpentry and welding. The Digital Training Academy offers 32,000 sponsored learning places through Coursera for areas such as software development, cloud computing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Which route fits the work you want to do? This guide explains the free government skills training in Nigeria 2026, who each option suits, how to apply and what to do after you receive a certificate.

What is available right now

The free government skills training in Nigeria 2026 is split across two routes. The first is the Federal Ministry of Education Technical and Vocational Education and Training Initiative. It is built around practical work. Training is offered through federal and state technical colleges, state institutions and registered private centres across the six geopolitical zones.

The official TVET site says tuition is fully funded through NELFund. Trainees may also receive monthly support, recognised certification, starter packs and access to business loans. Jobs are not guaranteed, but graduates can be placed on an employment portal and supported to start small businesses.

The second route is the Federal Government Digital Training Academy. It offers 32,000 free Coursera learning licences. The site lists centres with internet and devices, which matters if your laptop or data budget is the reason you have not started.

Choose TVET if you want a practical trade

TVET is the better fit when the work must be learned with your hands. The trade list includes electrical installation, welding, plumbing, furniture making, solar installation, refrigeration, automobile repair, livestock farming, fashion design, beauty therapy and computer hardware repair.

There are two main paths. The Short-Term Certificate programme lasts six months. The Vocational Education and Innovation programme lasts one year. For the short programme, the official page asks for a valid National Identification Number and Bank Verification Number. The one-year path accepts a First School Leaving Certificate, proof of earlier learning or some forms of non-formal education certificate.

Do not dismiss this route because it is not a university degree. A good electrician, solar installer or furniture maker solves a problem people already pay for. The certificate helps, but the real value is being able to do the work safely and show a customer the result.

Choose the Digital Training Academy if you want online work

The Digital Training Academy suits people who want computer-based careers. Its current skill areas include software development, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, information technology automation, financial technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Registration starts with your NIN and phone number. You complete a profile, take a pre-assessment and receive a learning level. The training is online through Coursera, but the programme also says centres are available for people who need internet access or a device.

Please choose with sense. Do not pick machine learning because the name sounds rich. If you are starting from zero, software basics, digital support or another entry route may give you a faster first project. The best course is the one you can finish and practise, not the one that looks impressive on your WhatsApp status.

How to choose between both routes

Start with the kind of work you want to do every week. If you enjoy tools, repairs, physical systems or making things, TVET is likely the stronger route. If you enjoy solving problems on a computer, reading instructions and sitting with one task for hours, the Digital Training Academy may suit you better.

Next, check your resources. Digital learning needs steady practice time, electricity and internet, even when a training centre helps. A practical trade needs transport to a centre, suitable clothing and the willingness to repeat physical tasks until your hands learn them.

Finally, look at your local market. A solar or refrigeration skill may start earning inside your town before a new coder finds a remote client. Apply only through the official portals

Use the official TVET portal at tvet.education.gov.ng and the Digital Training Academy portal at dta.education.gov.ng. Both pages show their application steps. Neither application should begin through a random WhatsApp agent.

Before you submit for the free government skills training in Nigeria 2026, make sure the name on your NIN matches your other records. Use a phone number and email address you can open. Save your confirmation page and any application number. If a person asks for money to secure a federal slot, stop and check the official support address on the portal.

The official pages do not currently display one clear closing date for every applicant. Apply early, then check the same portal for updates. Do not build your plan around a screenshot that may already be old.

Turn the training into proof of skill

A certificate alone will not carry the whole job search. Build proof while you learn. A carpentry trainee can photograph three clean projects from start to finish. A solar trainee can document a supervised installation. A digital learner can publish a small website, security lab, data project or cloud exercise.

Write down the problem, what you did and the result. That small record later becomes a CV bullet, a LinkedIn post and an interview example. Nigerian graduates often hide projects because no company paid for them. That is a mistake. Recruiters need evidence that you can do the work.

Free training still costs time. Give the first 90 days to one path. Attend every session, practise between classes and speak to people already earning from the skill. Do not collect five course links and finish none.

Set one small target for each month. In month one, learn the basics. In month two, complete two supervised projects. In month three, produce one clean portfolio piece and ask for feedback. That pace is not glamorous, but it builds something another person can trust.

17 August update: the Digital Training Academy launch

The Digital Training Academy page says its new experience is scheduled to go live on 17 August 2026. The Ministry describes free, world-class digital skills access for Nigerians. Because launches can open in stages, visit the official portal and confirm that registration is active before entering your details.

The wider Ministry programme also includes AWS Academy work with tertiary institutions. Its stated areas include cloud computing, machine learning and other emerging technologies. The Ministry said the pilot had coordinators from 43 federal universities and polytechnics and was being extended to federal, state and private tertiary institutions.

This is not necessarily a direct individual application on the same route as the Digital Training Academy. Ask your institution whether it has an AWS Academy coordinator, and use the Digital Training Academy portal for the public training route shown there. Do not pay a WhatsApp contact for a place.
