Google has opened a one-year student plan at no cost for eligible Nigerian tertiary students. The offer is useful, but the small renewal line matters just as much as the free year. This guide explains who can claim it, what Google AI Plus for Nigerian students includes, how to activate it, and how to avoid an unwanted charge later.
What Google AI Plus for Nigerian students includes
The plan gives eligible students one year of Google AI Plus without the usual monthly fee. Google says the package includes two times higher usage limits, 400 GB of cloud storage, access to Gemini Omni, unlimited uploads for Study Notebooks, interactive visual tools, and Gemini Live.

Who can claim the free plan
Google says the offer is for eligible college students aged 18 or above. Its Nigerian page also says new users and students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired may qualify. Student status must be verified again each year if access is to continue.
Nigerian reports on the launch say the offer covers students in accredited universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Verification is handled through SheerID, so you may be asked for a school email address, student identity card, admission letter, or current course registration evidence.
Use only the official Gemini student page or the Google AI student offer portal. Abeg, do not pay a random person to verify you. If your institution is not listed or your evidence is rejected, use the help route on the official page rather than sending documents to an unverified agent.
The deadline and payment detail people may miss
The current Nigerian offer says it must be redeemed by 31 December 2026. That gives eligible students time, but there is no benefit in waiting until the last day and then discovering that a document needs correction.
A valid form of payment is required during sign-up. Google also states that unless the plan is cancelled earlier, Google AI Plus will automatically charge NGN 7,700 per month after the free period ends. The annual value of that monthly price is NGN 92,400.
So yes, the first year is free for eligible students, but forgetting the renewal date can become expensive. Set two calendar reminders immediately after activation, one month before the free year ends and another seven days before it ends.
How to claim Google AI Plus for Nigerian students
First, open the official offer page and sign in with the Google Account you want to keep using for school. Read the terms before continuing, especially the payment and renewal section.
Second, start the student verification process. Select your institution and provide the evidence requested by SheerID. Make sure every uploaded image is clear, current, and shows the same name used on your school record.
Third, wait for approval and activate the plan from the offer portal. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page and note the activation date. Then open your Google subscriptions page to confirm the plan, renewal date, and payment method shown on the account.
How to use the tools without cheating
The best use of Google AI Plus for Nigerian students is learning support, not answer collection. Upload your own lecture notes and ask Gemini to explain one difficult idea in simpler words. Ask it to quiz you, show where your answer is weak, or compare two theories using the course material you provided.
For writing, use it to test an outline, find gaps in your argument, or improve clarity. Do not ask it to produce a full assignment and submit the result. Universities may require disclosure, and your responsibility for accuracy does not disappear because a tool supplied the words. AI can invent references, mix up authors, or state a confident claim that is simply wrong. Open every source, confirm the title and author, check the date, and read enough of the original to know that it supports your sentence.

If you do not want the paid plan, cancel before the free period ends and confirm the cancellation in your account. Do not rely only on a reminder email. Save the cancellation confirmation until the next billing date has passed.
