CGPA Calculator

Work out your semester GPA and your CGPA on the 5-point or 4-point scale, the way Nigerian universities and polytechnics grade.

How this CGPA calculator works

Put in each course’s credit units and the grade you got. The calculator multiplies the units by the grade points, adds everything up and divides by your total units, which is the same sum your school uses. To get your CGPA, open Include previous semesters and put in the units you’ve done so far and your current CGPA.

What CGPA do I need for a first class?

On the 5-point scale most Nigerian universities use: First Class is 4.50 to 5.00, Second Class Upper 3.50 to 4.49, Second Class Lower 2.40 to 3.49, Third Class 1.50 to 2.39 and Pass 1.00 to 1.49. Polytechnics use the 4-point scale and set their own bands, so check your handbook.

How many points is each grade worth?

A is 5, B is 4, C is 3, D is 2, E is 1 and F is 0. Some schools have dropped E, so a score under 45 is an F there. If yours has, just don’t pick E.

Does a carryover pull my CGPA down?

Yes. An F counts its units with zero points. Where both attempts count, it keeps pulling your CGPA down even after you pass the retake; where the new grade replaces it, it stops once you pass. Our guide to carryover in university works through both.
