JAMB result is out. You passed the cut off mark, and the congratulations have already started rolling in. Enjoy it small.
Then come back to earth, because passing JAMB is not the finish line. It is only the first gate.
The real test is Post UTME 2026, and this is where plenty strong candidates fall for silly reasons. Some do not even know the screening has started. Others keep saying “next week” until the form closes on them.
Let me show you how to prepare and pass, step by step, without losing your mind.
What Post UTME means, and why it still matters in 2026
Post UTME is the screening each university runs after JAMB. It is how the school decides who, among all the people who passed JAMB, actually gets the few available spaces.
Some schools give you a written test, usually computer based. Some just use your O level and UTME scores to rank you. Either way, the school is lining you up against everybody else who picked them as first choice.
So even with a beautiful JAMB score, a weak screening can still cost you admission. That is why Post UTME 2026 is not something to fold your arms about.
First, sort out your registration. The forms are out now
As I am writing this, many universities have already opened their Post UTME screening forms. Schools like UNIPORT, Covenant, Babcock and Rivers State University are live. More are joining every week.
Two things to do today. Log into your school portal and check if their form is out. Then note the closing date and pay early, because some forms close faster than you expect.
Do not wait for your friend to gist you when the form drops. Check the school website and JAMB yourself. You can confirm your UTME profile on the official JAMB portal, and follow trusted news like Premium Times for registration updates. If you are still not sure where your score places you, read our breakdown of the JAMB 2026 cut off marks first.
Know your own school’s cut off mark, not just JAMB’s
Here is where many people confuse themselves.
JAMB set 150 as the general minimum for universities in 2026. But that is the floor, not the gate.
Each school sets its own, higher line. Pan-Atlantic is asking for 220. Big schools like UNILAG, UI, OAU, UNN and UNIBEN sit around 200. Rivers State University pegged 190 for all faculties.
So “I passed JAMB” is not the full story. The real question is whether you passed the cut off mark of the exact school and course you chose. Find that number. Plan around it.
How to actually prepare for Post UTME 2026
If your school gives a written screening, treat it like a mini JAMB. Same subjects, same style, and sometimes a little current affairs on top.
A simple plan that works:
- Go back to your four UTME subjects and revise the topics you were shaky on.
- Practise past Post UTME questions for that specific school. They repeat their patterns.
- Add light current affairs. Know your school motto, the vice chancellor, and the big national news.
- Time yourself. The computer based ones move fast, so speed matters.
Study smart, not just long. If you like using AI to revise, do it the correct way so it actually teaches you instead of getting you into trouble. We wrote a full guide on how to use AI to study without getting flagged that works perfectly for exam prep too.
The small mistakes that fail strong candidates
Omor, it pains me how many sharp students lose admission to things they could easily avoid.
The common ones are using a different email or phone number from their JAMB one and then missing every update, not uploading their O level results to JAMB CAPS on time, choosing a very competitive course with a moderate score and no backup plan, and forgetting that the JAMB screening and the school screening are two separate things.
Slow down. Read every instruction twice. Most Post UTME wahala is not about brains. It is about carelessness.
If your score is low, you still have moves
Say your score did not meet your dream school. Do not cry. You still have options.
JAMB has opened Change of Institution and Change of Course for the 2026 cycle. You can move to a school or a course that matches the score you have.
You can also look at a school with a lower cut off, or a related course in the same faculty. A lower entry course today can still carry you into the same career tomorrow. One number does not end your story, so adjust and keep moving.
After admission, start thinking ahead
Getting in is step one. The students who shine later are the ones who start building early.
While your mates are waiting for 100 level to carry them, you can start learning a skill that pays. We showed how Nigerian students are already earning dollars before NYSC even ends. The earlier you start, the better for you.
So pass your Post UTME 2026 first. Then use school as your launchpad, not your finish line.
