Picture two Nigerian students who did the same MSc at the same university in Manchester, and came out with the same class of degree. One of them applies for her post study work visa on 20 December 2026. The other applies on 5 January 2027. Just over two weeks apart.

The first one gets two full years to work in the UK. The second one gets eighteen months. Same degree, same result, but one of them just lost six months of UK income and career runway because of the date on her form.

Omor, that is a painful way to lose six months. And it all comes down to a change in the UK Graduate Route that plenty of people have heard about but not really sat down to understand.

Let me break it down plainly, so you know exactly where you stand.

What the UK Graduate Route actually is

The UK Graduate Route is the visa that lets you stay and work in the UK after you finish your degree. No job offer needed. No sponsor needed. No salary threshold to hit. You just need to have finished an eligible course at a licensed university.

For a Nigerian who has done the whole journey to a UK university, this is the golden window. It is the time you use to find a proper job, get an employer to sponsor you for the Skilled Worker visa, and set your feet down properly on that side.

Right now, that window is two years for anyone with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. It is three years if you did a PhD.

What is changing in 2027

Here is the change you must not miss. From 1 January 2027, the UK Graduate Route for bachelor’s and master’s graduates drops from two years to eighteen months. That is six months gone.

The UK government confirmed this through a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules in October 2025. It was first hinted in the May 2025 immigration white paper, and now it is settled. UKCISA, the national body that advises international students, has it in black and white on their Graduate route page.

If you finish a PhD, relax. Doctoral graduates are not affected and still get the full three years.

The one date that decides everything

Now pay attention, because this is the part people get wrong.

The eighteen months rule is tied to the date you apply for the UK Graduate Route. It is not the date you started your course, and it is not the date you graduated. It is the day your application goes in.

• Apply on or before 31 December 2026, and you keep the full two years.
• Apply on or after 1 January 2027, and you get eighteen months.

That is the whole game. One is a day in December, the other is the following week in January, and they carry a six month gap between them.

If you are already studying, chase the deadline

If you are on a UK master’s right now and your course finishes in 2026, this is your moment. Move fast.

Here is how it works. Your university has to confirm to the Home Office that you have completed and passed before you can apply. So the moment your results are confirmed, do not waste a single week. Get your documents ready and put in that Graduate Route application before 31 December 2026, so you lock in the two years.

Do not sit down to “rest” after your dissertation defence. That kind of resting can quietly cost you six months of work rights. If you are starting in September 2026, hear me well

Let me be honest with you, because this is where I see people fooling themselves.

If you are starting your master’s in September 2026, you will most likely not beat the deadline. A one year taught master’s that starts in September 2026 usually finishes around late 2027. Your results will not be confirmed until then, so your Graduate Route application will land in 2027.

That means eighteen months is your reality, not two years. I am not saying this to discourage you. I am saying it so you plan with your eyes open.

Build your career plan around eighteen months. In plain terms, that means you start job hunting the moment you land, not after you graduate. Every single month counts more for you now, so treat your time like the scarce thing it has become.

The other change nobody is talking about

While everybody is staring at the Graduate Route, there is a quieter change that touches your visa application itself.

From 11 November 2025, the money you must show for the student visa went up. You now need to prove £1,529 per month if you will study in London, and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. For a London course, that is close to £13,761 in maintenance money alone, sitting on top of your tuition.

One small mercy for us: Nigeria is not on the list of countries hit by the new visa “brake” that slows some applications. So that particular wahala is not ours to carry.

What you should actually do now

So what is the move? It depends on which side of the line you fall.

If you are finishing in 2026, treat that Graduate Route application as urgent. Apply the second your completion is confirmed, and get it in before 31 December 2026.
