The new federal scholarship figures are much bigger than the amounts many students still have saved in old WhatsApp screenshots.
The Federal Ministry of Education says its national scholarship and bursary grants have increased by 50%. The highest listed award is now N750,000 for PhD students, while Master’s students may receive N600,000 and undergraduates may receive N450,000.
That is serious support, but an amount on a government page is not the same thing as an open application for everybody. This Federal Scholarship Grant 2026 guide explains the new figures, the official portal, who the listed awards cover and the checks to make before you upload a single document.
What changed in the federal scholarship amounts
The Federal Scholarship Board page lists a 50% increase across the main award levels. Under the Nigerian Scholarship Award, the PhD amount moved from N500,000 to N750,000. The Master’s amount moved from N400,000 to N600,000, while the undergraduate amount moved from N300,000 to N450,000.
The same new amounts are listed for the Education Bursary Award. NCE students are listed at N450,000. The Ministry also lists N450,000 for eligible undergraduate students in vocational education, medicine, dentistry, surgery, nursing and physiotherapy, as well as eligible HND students.
These figures are not a promise that every student will be paid. Scholarship awards have eligibility rules, available places and application periods. Read the notice for the exact scheme you want before counting the money inside your school budget.
Who manages the Federal Scholarship Grant 2026
The Federal Scholarship Board is a department of the Federal Ministry of Education. It handles Nigerian awards, Bilateral Education Agreement awards, Commonwealth scholarship work and other federal scholarship duties.
This matters because scammers often borrow a government logo and create a form that looks official. Start from the Federal Scholarship Board page or the official scholarship portal. Do not start from a shortened link sent by somebody who says they can secure a slot.
Check whether applications are actually open
The scholarship portal is the place to create a profile, see available schemes and follow the current application instructions. A revised grant table can remain online even when a particular application window has closed. That is why the first question is not only “How much?” It is also “Which scheme is accepting applications today?”
Look for a notice that gives the scheme name, academic level, eligibility, required documents and closing date. If those details are missing, do not guess. Save the official page and check again. A real deadline should appear on the Ministry or scholarship portal, not only on a social media flyer.
Abeg, do not pay an agent to “activate” a free federal application. If a payment is genuinely required for a separate service, the official portal should state the reason and approved payment route clearly.
Documents to prepare before the portal opens
Requirements differ by award, but most serious applications will ask for clear identity and academic records. Prepare a recent passport photograph, school admission evidence, student identification, current results or transcript, and any required National Identification Number details.
Use the same name order across your documents. If your school record says one thing and your identification says another, fix the difference early or prepare the official evidence that explains it. Scan documents clearly and name the files in a way you can recognise before uploading.
Do not submit a blurry screenshot when the portal asks for a document. Open each file after scanning it. Check every page, number and signature. One careful review is cheaper than losing an opportunity because the reviewer could not read your result.
How to write the application without sounding copied
If the scheme asks for a statement, answer the actual question. Explain your course, your academic direction, the financial or professional need and what the award would help you complete. Use real examples from your studies, service or community work.
Do not paste a dramatic story from the internet. Reviewers can see when fifty applicants use the same opening. Your own clear facts are stronger than borrowed suffering. Keep the language simple and make every claim something you can support if asked.

How to spot a fake scholarship page
Check the web address first. Federal Ministry pages use education.gov.ng. Be careful with extra words, misspellings and strange endings. A page may copy the colours and logo while sending your details somewhere else.
Next, check the message. Pressure is a warning sign. Scammers want you to pay before a made-up midnight deadline, send an identity document through WhatsApp or reveal a one-time password. An official application should not need your banking password or card PIN.
Finally, return to the Ministry website by typing the address yourself. If you cannot find the announcement there, wait. Missing one suspicious form is better than sending your identity and money to a stranger.
What to do while you wait for a suitable award
Keep your academic records current and build evidence of what you can do. The Federal Ministry is also promoting skills programmes. Our guide to free government skills training in Nigeria compares practical and digital routes.
Set an alert to check the official scholarship pages once a week. Keep one folder for notices and another for your verified documents. When the right award opens, you should be preparing a good application, not searching for a missing result at the last minute.
Your next step
Open the official Federal Scholarship Board page and the scholarship portal. Confirm which Federal Scholarship Grant 2026 scheme matches your level, whether applications are open and what evidence the current notice requests.
