The Dangote scholarship 2026 is money you won’t have to pay back, for 30,000 undergraduates in federal and state universities, and right now there’s nowhere to apply for it.
That last part is the one that matters this week, because the foundation says the scheme starts in October with the new session and it has not opened a portal yet. So if a link lands in your class group asking for a form fee, a registration fee or your bank details for the Dangote scholarship, it is not from Dangote.
You are probably thinking, then why read about the Dangote scholarship 2026 now, when there is nothing to fill? Because the students who get these awards are usually the ones who knew the rules before the form came out, not the ones who found out the day it closed.
What was actually announced about the Dangote scholarship 2026
On Friday 14 August 2026, a delegation from the Aliko Dangote Foundation led by its programme director, Aisha Halima Ilyasu, visited the National Universities Commission in Abuja to brief the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu. Everything below comes from NUC’s own report of the meeting, published on 4 September. It is the most reliable account there is, because the regulator that oversees your university wrote it itself.
- Who: undergraduates in Nigerian federal and state universities.
- How many: 30,000 students in the first phase.
- Which courses: science, technology, engineering and medicine, and related disciplines.
- Grade: a CGPA of at least 2.5, which is a Second Class Lower.
- Where: all 774 local government areas.
- Disability: five per cent of the places are kept for students living with disabilities.
- When: it’s meant to start in October 2026, alongside the 2026/2027 session.
- Selection: eligible students will go through a selection process before anybody is awarded.
- Repayment: none. It’s a grant, not a loan.
Professor Ribadu made that last point himself. He said the difference between this and NELFUND is that Dangote’s support is non-refundable, while NELFUND money is a loan you repay after school. Keep that in your head, because a lot of people are already mixing the two up in the group chats.
What nobody has said yet
This is the list that should make you careful, because every gap here is a gap somebody on WhatsApp will happily fill with a guess.
- How much each student gets. No amount has been published.
- The portal and the dates. No official application link, no opening date, no closing date.
- 100 level students. A fresher doesn’t have a CGPA yet, and the announcement doesn’t say how new students will be treated.
- Which courses count as related. STEM is clear. Where courses like nursing, pharmacy or agriculture fall hasn’t been spelt out, though medicine is named.
- Private universities. The announcement only names federal and state universities, so a private university student shouldn’t assume they’re covered.
When any of these gets answered, the answer will come from the foundation, from NUC, or from your own university. Not from a blog that says “apply now” with no date on it, including this one.
The link in your group chat
Every big scholarship in Nigeria comes with a wave of fake ones, and the pattern hardly changes from one year to the next, so here is what students do and what to do instead.
What students do: click the link because the post says Dangote in big letters and uses his photo.
Do this instead: check who published it. If it is not the foundation, NUC or your university, treat it as somebody’s guess at best.
What students do: pay a small form fee because ₦2,000 feels like nothing next to a scholarship.
Do this instead: don’t pay anybody anything until an official portal exists. Nothing announced so far mentions a fee.
What students do: type in BVN, bank details or a password on a page they found on WhatsApp.
Do this instead: keep those until you’re on a page you reached from an official source. A real application can wait a day while you check.
What students do: forward it to the whole class to help.
Do this instead: ask in the group where the link came from before sharing it. That one question has saved more students than any warning post.
What to do now, before the form comes out
- Check your CGPA properly. Get it from your portal or your latest result, not from memory. If you’re close to 2.5, this semester matters more than usual.
- Confirm your course counts. If it’s clearly science, technology, engineering or medicine, you’re in the target group. If it’s borderline, ask your faculty officer when the details come out.
- Get your documents in one folder. Your admission letter, latest result slip, school ID card and a clear passport photo. Most Nigerian scholarship forms ask for these, and scanning them the night before a deadline is where people get stuck.
- Watch the right places. Your university’s student affairs or scholarship office, the NUC website, and the foundation’s own channels. We’ll put it on our scholarships page the day an official link exists.
- Don’t drop your other plans. 30,000 places sounds big until you remember how many STEM students are in federal and state universities. Keep your Federal Scholarship Grant and NELFUND options open at the same time.
Dangote grant or NELFUND loan?
If you get both, fine, but they are not the same thing, and it helps to be clear on the difference before anybody asks you to choose.
- Dangote: a grant for STEM undergraduates in federal and state universities with a 2.5 CGPA. You don’t repay it. Not open yet.
- NELFUND: a government student loan for tuition and upkeep. You repay it after you finish and start working. Open now, and here’s how to apply.
So if your fees are due now, NELFUND is the thing you can actually act on this month, and the Dangote scholarship 2026 is the thing you prepare for.
And when that link shows up in the group chat, ask where it came from first. No pay anybody for form wey never open.
