Quick answer. NECO GCE 2026, which NECO calls the SSCE External, closes normal registration at midnight on 26 October on the official SSCE External portal. From 27 October to 3 November you can still register, but it costs ₦5,000 more. After that, walk-in registration is ₦43,000. The exam runs from Wednesday 4 November to Saturday 21 November, part on computer and part on paper.
NECO GCE 2026 registration at the normal fee closes at midnight tonight, 26 October. From tomorrow, the same registration costs ₦5,000 more.
That isn’t a rumour from a cybercafé WhatsApp status. It’s in NECO’s own reviewed registration guideline, signed by the Registrar, and after the late window shuts on 3 November the only door left is walk-in registration at ₦43,000.
You’re probably thinking five thousand naira is not the end of the world, and you’ll sort it out on Friday when the money lands. Maybe it isn’t. But the extra fee is the smallest thing you lose by waiting, and I’d rather you see the rest before you decide.
What NECO GCE 2026 is, and what it can’t do for you this year
NECO’s paperwork calls it the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination External. Everybody else calls it NECO GCE. It’s the November sitting for private candidates, and most people writing it are trying to fix one missing credit, usually English or Mathematics, or to add a subject their course demands.
Be clear about timing, though. The first paper is on 4 November, and public universities close their 2026 admissions on 31 October. So this result is for your 2027 admission, not this one. We did the same arithmetic for the WAEC sitting in our post on whether the WAEC GCE 2026 can still get you admitted this year. The answer for NECO is the same, only stronger, because NECO hasn’t even started.
The NECO GCE 2026 dates and fees, straight from NECO
- 7 July to 26 October 2026, midnight: normal registration at ₦30,000. That covers the four-figure table and a waterproof certificate jacket. Stamp duty, service and Remita charges come on top.
- 27 October to 3 November 2026: late registration, with an extra ₦5,000.
- Walk-in: ₦43,000 per candidate. NECO says a walk-in candidate can register no less than three hours before the paper they want to write.
- Wednesday 4 November to Saturday 21 November 2026: the examination.
The guideline says twice that the fee is non-refundable once paid, so read it before you pay, not after. You can download NECO’s reviewed 2026 SSCE External registration guideline yourself, and I’d advise you to, because some of the blogs are still quoting older figures.
This year it’s part computer, part paper
NECO says the 2026 SSCE External is dual mode, a hybrid computer based examination alongside the usual pen and paper examination, across sixteen subjects. The guideline doesn’t say which papers go on the computer, and I’m not going to guess for you.
What the timetable does say is telling. It warns that where the time on the “virtual question paper” differs from the printed timetable, you follow the virtual paper. So some of your objective papers will likely be on a screen, with a clock you can’t argue with.
If you’ve never answered objective questions on a screen against a timer, start practising this week. The free past question sites we checked for post-UTME carry O’Level questions too, and they cost you nothing. A scientific calculator is allowed. A programmable one is not, and neither is your phone, smart watch or tablet.
How to register without a cybercafé mess
- Get your NIN right first. NECO won’t let you register without a valid NIN, and the NIN is printed on your certificate. If your NIN details don’t match your other records, sort it out the way we explained in our guide to JAMB and NIN alignment before anybody types your name.
- Take a fresh passport photograph on a white background, not more than six months old. The same photo goes on your certificate.
- Create your account on the SSCE External portal with your email or phone number, activate it, and pay into NECO’s TSA by ATM card, internet banking, USSD, wallet or at a bank branch.
- Go to a reputable cybercafé for your fingerprint capture to complete the registration. There’ll be biometric verification in the hall, and a mismatch is treated as impersonation.
- Pick your exam neighbourhood carefully. NECO says it can’t be edited after upload.
- Print your photocard and get the referee section signed and stamped by a principal, a clergyman or chief imam, a legal practitioner of at least ten years, or the officers NECO lists. You no longer take it to the NECO state office.
- NECO asks candidates to reprint the photocard two weeks before the exam to confirm their centre. If you’re registering this week, that date has already passed, so reprint it as soon as you finish and again before your first paper.
Mistakes candidates make with NECO GCE
What candidates do: Hand everything to the cybercafé and leave while they upload.
Do this instead: Sit beside the operator and read every field before upload. NECO gives you one correction only, a full change of name isn’t allowed, and you can correct either your name or your passport photo, not both.
What candidates do: Register at two cafés “just in case” the first one messed up.
Do this instead: Register once and check it properly. NECO cancels the entire result of any candidate who registers more than once.
What candidates do: Plan to register on 3 November, the last day of late registration.
Do this instead: Register now. Portals slow down on the last day, and if you miss it you’re paying ₦43,000 as a walk-in, the day before your paper.
The subjects you can write
NECO lists sixteen subjects for the 2026 SSCE External: Accounting, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Christian Religious Studies, Civic Education, Commerce, Economics, English Language, General Mathematics, Geography, Government, Islamic Studies, Literature-in-English, Marketing and Physics. If the subject you need isn’t on that list, this sitting can’t give it to you, so don’t pay and hope.
The two papers most of you are writing for sit in the middle. English Language is on Saturday 14 November, with the objective paper at 10am and the test of orals at 1:15pm. General Mathematics is on Wednesday 18 November, objective at 10am and essay at 12 noon. Check your own subjects on NECO’s 2026 SSCE External timetable, and be seated thirty minutes before each paper, because NECO won’t let anybody in after it starts.
When the result eventually comes out, our guides on how to check your NECO result and how to upload a NECO result to JAMB CAPS will still apply. For now the only job is the one with a midnight on it.
Na today normal registration for NECO GCE 2026 close o, no wait make you pay extra five thousand.
