There is a belief that finishing your final year and collecting your statement of result means NYSC is now automatic. It is not. A separate list, kept by JAMB and not by your school, decides whether you serve at all.
Most graduates never hear about it until the day NYSC registration opens and the portal refuses their name.
That list is the JAMB matriculation list.
If your name is missing from it, JAMB does not officially recognise that you were ever admitted. No recognition means no mobilisation, no call-up letter, and no discharge certificate at the end. Sha, this is one of those quiet things that ruins a whole year for people who did nothing wrong.
What the JAMB matriculation list actually is
Every institution is supposed to send JAMB a list of the students it admitted for a given session. That submission becomes the official record of who legally entered the school through the proper admission process.
The JAMB matriculation list is simply that record.
Notice who does the work here. Your school submits it. You do not. So a student can attend lectures for five years, pay every fee, pass every course, and still be invisible to JAMB because the school never forwarded the list.
This is why the problem often hits a whole department at once. If nobody in your set appears, the school is usually the reason, not you.
Why it decides whether you serve
NYSC does not verify graduates by looking at your certificate. It verifies them against JAMB records during senate list and mobilisation checks.
So the chain runs like this. Your school submits you to JAMB. JAMB confirms you to NYSC. NYSC mobilises you.
Break the first link and the rest collapses.
And the discharge certificate is not a small loss. Federal jobs ask for it. Serious private employers ask for it. Some postgraduate programmes and visa applications ask for it too.
How to check your name on the JAMB matriculation list
Do this yourself. Do not send anyone money to check it for you.
- Go to the official JAMB portal at jamb.gov.ng and open your e-Facility account.
- Log in with the email address you used at registration. If you have forgotten it, use the profile recovery option rather than opening a new account, because a second account will confuse your record further.
- Print your admission letter and your result slip. If JAMB can generate an admission letter for you, your admission is in the system.
- Ask your school. Go to the admissions officer or the exams and records unit and ask one direct question: has the matriculation list for my set been sent to JAMB? Ask for the year it was submitted.
Put both answers together. If JAMB can produce your admission letter and your school confirms the submission, you are fine.
What to do if your name is not there
First, do not panic and do not pay a stranger on WhatsApp.
Work out which of the two situations you are in.
Situation one: the school never submitted. Then no one in your department is listed either. Check with two or three coursemates. If they are also missing, this is a school problem and it needs a group approach. One student shouting alone gets ignored. A department writing together, through the course representative and the head of department, gets movement.
Situation two: you entered outside the normal JAMB route. This is common for people who came in through pre-degree, remedial, diploma conversion, part-time that later converted to full time, or a transfer that was never properly logged. In this case the school did its part but you were never in the JAMB system to begin with. Your route is regularisation.
The regularisation route, explained plainly
Regularisation is JAMB letting you correct the record after the fact. It backdates your admission into the system so you become mobilisable.
The steps are straightforward.
- Log in to your JAMB e-Facility account and look under the Application menu for Late Application, which is also labelled Regularisation.
- Enter your institution, your matriculation number, your course, and the year you were admitted.
- Upload your admission letter from the school, your O Level result, and a passport photograph.
- Pay the fee through the portal itself. Confirm the current amount on the JAMB portal before you pay anybody anything, because the figures circulating on blogs and WhatsApp go stale quickly and agents inflate them.
- Wait for JAMB to process it, then check your profile for an updated admission letter.
JAMB closes regularisation for each cycle on a set date. Dates get forwarded around with a lot of confidence and very little accuracy, so read it off the JAMB site yourself rather than from a broadcast.
Do this now, not in your final semester
Here is the part people get wrong. They plan to sort it out near graduation.
By then the officers who handled your admission may have been transferred, the records unit may have moved offices, and you are competing for attention with everyone else who left it late.
Check it in your second year. Check it again in your third. It costs you one afternoon each time.

Service year is not a pause button. It is the year your CV either grows or stands still.
Graduates who sort their paperwork early arrive at camp with a clear head and a plan. The ones who spent three months chasing JAMB offices arrive exhausted and take the first posting they are given.

- Log in to JAMB e-Facility and try to print your admission letter.
- Ask your school whether the matriculation list for your set was submitted, and in which year.
- Compare notes with two coursemates so you know whether the problem is yours alone or the whole department.
- If you entered outside the JAMB route, start regularisation now and pay only through the official portal.
- Save screenshots and receipts of everything. Keep them until your discharge certificate is in your hand.
