Since 2024, more than 1.5 million Nigerian students have had their school fees paid by the federal government.
That is not a campaign promise. The money has already gone out, over N240 billion of it, through the NELFUND student loan.
Omor. That is a lot of school fees.
Yet plenty students who qualify have still not applied. Some believe it is a scam. Some think their family earns too much to qualify. Some started the application, met one small error, and gave up.
This guide clears everything: who can apply, what the loan covers, how to apply on the portal, and the small mistakes that block people at the last minute.
What Is the NELFUND Student Loan?
NELFUND is short for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. The federal government set it up in 2024 to lend students money for school at zero interest.
Zero interest means you repay exactly what you borrowed. If NELFUND pays N300,000 for your fees, you owe N300,000. The figure does not grow while you sleep.
By June 2026, the fund had reached over 1.5 million students across about 270 public institutions. You can confirm the numbers yourself on the official NELFUND website.
So no, this is not one of those schemes that trend for two weeks and disappear. It is running right now, and some of your coursemates are quietly enjoying it.
Who Can Apply in 2026
The NELFUND student loan requirements are simpler than people think. You need four things:
- You are a Nigerian citizen.
- You have admission into a public university, polytechnic, or college of education.
- You have a valid NIN.
- You have a BVN and a bank account in your own name.
Private university students are not covered yet. That is the biggest gap in the scheme for now.
And here is the update many people missed: the family income limit is gone. When the scheme began, there was talk of income caps and guarantors. NELFUND removed that barrier. Whether your parent is a farmer or a federal director, you can apply.
What the Loan Actually Covers
Two things, and it helps to separate them clearly.
The first is your school fees. NELFUND pays this directly to your institution. The money never enters your account, but your school records will show your fees as paid.
The second is upkeep. Around N20,000 is paid into your own account every month to support feeding and daily expenses. It will not fund a soft life, but it keeps garri and data flowing.
If you are still fighting for admission, face that first. Accept your offer on JAMB CAPS, prepare well for your Post UTME, and once your school has your details, come back for the loan.
How to Apply on the NELFUND Portal
When your documents are complete, the NELFUND student loan application takes 15 to 30 minutes.

- Visit portal.nelf.gov.ng. That is the only official portal.
- Click Apply Now and create an account with your email.
- Verify your identity with your JAMB details or your NIN.
- Select your institution and enter your matric number.
- Upload your admission letter and any other documents requested.
- Review everything carefully, then submit.
The application is completely free. No agent fee, no processing fee, no “chairman, anything for the boys”. Anybody charging you money for a NELFUND form is simply collecting free money from you.
When and How You Pay It Back
This is the part that worries people, so let me say it plainly.
You pay nothing while you are in school. You pay nothing during NYSC. Repayment starts about two years after you complete NYSC, and only once you have a job.
From there, 10 percent of your monthly salary is deducted and sent to NELFUND until the loan is cleared. Because there is no interest, the amount never increases.
Your service year is where that clock quietly starts counting, so it pays to plan early. We already broke down what to do after NYSC camp in a separate guide.
Mistakes That Block or Delay Applications
The same problems show up every session:
- Name mismatch. Your NIN, BVN, and JAMB records must carry the same name with the same spelling. One extra middle name in one place can hang your application for weeks.
- School data not uploaded. NELFUND verifies you against records your school submits. If verification fails, your student affairs office is the first place to visit, not Twitter.
- Someone else’s account details. The upkeep must enter an account tied to your own BVN. Your mother’s account will not work, no matter how much you trust her.
- Deadline rush. The portal slows down when everybody remembers at once. Apply early in the session and rest your head.
Should You Collect It?
Honest answer: if school fees are the reason you might defer, or your people are selling things to keep you in school, then yes. The NELFUND student loan is the fairest borrowing you will find in this country. Zero interest does not exist in any bank.
But borrow because you need it, not because it is available. It is still a loan, not your share of the national cake. Future you will do the repaying.
And if you want money that nobody will ever ask you to return, see how students are learning to earn in dollars from Nigeria without japa.
Fees Sorted? Now Face the Real Work
NELFUND can pay your fees, but it cannot attend your 8am class, and it definitely cannot write your project.
That part is where we come in. Delight Data Exploration has spent over 12 years helping students with research, writing support, and academic guidance that stands strong under any scrutiny.
