Act on any offer quickly: if CAPS shows an admission, use the JAMB acceptance deadline guide immediately. If no offer is showing, keep following the options below while the admission window remains open.

There are fewer than ten weeks between 24 August and 31 October 2026. That is the remaining public university admission window under the 2026 timetable. Private universities have until 30 November, while polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education have until 31 December. If your screening result came out lower than you hoped, the clock is now as important as the score.

That is the whole window. JAMB told every public university at the 2026 policy meeting to finish admissions on or before 31 October. Private universities have till 30 November. Polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education have till 31 December.

So if your screening result came out and the number was lower than you hoped, the clock is the real problem, not the score. fewer than ten weeks is enough to fix this if you move now. It is not enough if you spend six of them crying on WhatsApp.

Let us go through what actually happens when you miss the post UTME cut off mark, and what you can genuinely do about it.

The post UTME cut off mark is not one single number

This one confuses people every single year.

The 150 that JAMB announced is a minimum admissible score. It is the floor for universities and colleges of nursing. Polytechnics and monotechnics sit at 100. That floor only says you are allowed into the conversation. It does not say anybody must admit you.

What your school actually uses is an aggregate. Most universities blend your UTME score with your screening performance, and plenty of them add your O level grades on top. The formula is different from school to school, so do not copy your cousin’s calculation from another university and assume it applies to you.

Then there is the departmental cut off, which is where the real gatekeeping happens and where the post UTME cut off mark that matters to you actually lives. Medicine, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy and Computer Science routinely sit far above the university’s own general mark. You can clear the school and still fall short of the department. That is normal, and it is not a personal failure.

Check CAPS before you conclude anything

Abeg, before you decide your life is over, go and look at your CAPS profile properly.

Every year we meet students who had already been offered admission and did not know, because they were waiting for a name to appear on a list somewhere or for a phone call that was never coming. CAPS is where the offer lives. Log in and read it yourself.

Look at three things. Whether an offer is sitting there unaccepted. Whether the school has recommended you for a different course from the one you applied for. And whether your status still reads as being processed, because processing is not rejection.

The four week rule that catches good students

JAMB was clear at the policy meeting that candidates who receive an offer must accept it within four weeks. Miss that window and the offer can be withdrawn.

People lose admission this way every year, and it is painful because nothing was wrong with them. They were just waiting to see if something better would come.

Here is the honest advice. If an offer lands and it is a real course at a real institution, accept it. You can work on improving your situation later through a change of course inside the school. You cannot do anything at all with an offer that has expired.

Option one, change of institution or change of course

If your score is decent but your chosen school was simply too competitive, this is your strongest move.

JAMB runs change of institution and change of course through the eFacility portal. You pay, you submit, and in most cases you still need to visit an accredited CBT centre for thumbprint verification before it is treated as complete.

Two warnings, and please take them seriously.

First, confirm the current fee and the closing date on the JAMB website itself, not on a blog. Those figures move, and the blogs quoting them do not update.

Second, timing matters more than money. A change made after a school has finished its own screening may simply not be recognised by that school. Sooner is better, always.

Option two, be honest about the aggregate and aim lower

Sha, sometimes the maths just does not work.

If your aggregate is genuinely far below what your department takes, moving to a less competitive university, a state university, or a related course inside the same faculty is not defeat. Anatomy, Physiology, Public Health and Medical Laboratory Science all sit in the same building as Medicine, and internal transfers do happen.

We have written before about the polytechnic route compared with university, because the polytechnic floor of 100 opens doors that stay shut at 150. HND holders are not second class citizens in the job market, whatever your uncle told you in 2009.

And keep an eye out for supplementary and mop up rounds. Schools that do not fill their quota reopen, quietly and late. Our note on the JAMB mop up exam covers how that works.

Option three, use the year instead of mourning it

If nothing lands this cycle, the worst thing you can do is disappear for twelve months and resurface next June with exactly the same preparation you had this year.

Fix the O level gaps first, because a missing credit in English or Mathematics will block you again no matter how well you score. Then look at IJMB or JUPEB, which route you into 200 level by direct entry.

And learn something that pays while you wait. There are free government skills programmes running right now that cost you nothing but your time. A year with a skill in your hand is a completely different year from a year spent waiting.

Get your documents ready before you need them

Whichever route you take, the paperwork is the same, and the people who move fastest are the ones who prepared early.

Keep your O level result, your UTME slip, your screening printout, your birth certificate and your local government identification scanned and saved in one folder. When a supplementary list drops and gives you three days to respond, you will not be hunting for documents.

The same discipline applies later, by the way. Your name has to reach the JAMB matriculation list before NYSC will ever mobilise you, and students who ignore that at the start pay for it four years down the line.

What decides the next four years is what you do in the next fewer than ten weeks. Check CAPS today. Accept any real offer within the four weeks. If a change of institution makes sense, start it now rather than in October. And if this cycle closes on you, walk into the next one with better grades and a skill, not with the same file.
