The admission letter is free. Keeping the admission is not.
Admission lists for the 2026/2027 session are dropping in batches right now. UNIBEN, UNIZIK, LASU, KWASU and a growing list of schools have started releasing names. And the moment your name appears, a clock starts ticking on a payment many candidates never budgeted for: the acceptance fee.
Every year, students celebrate the admission, relax for two weeks, then discover the acceptance fee deadline passed while they were sharing the good news. Others rush to pay and hand their money to a scammer instead of their school. This guide covers both traps.
What Is an Acceptance Fee, Really?
An acceptance fee is a one-time payment a newly admitted student makes to confirm they are taking the admission the school offered. Think of it as a commitment deposit. The school offered you a seat, and the fee is how you say yes in a way the school takes seriously.
Two things you must know about it:
It is non-refundable in almost every Nigerian university. If you pay and later choose another school, that money is gone. So if you are juggling two admission offers, think carefully before you pay both.
It is separate from school fees. Paying the acceptance fee does not cover tuition, hostel or registration charges. Those come later, with their own deadlines.
How Much Are Schools Charging in 2026?
There is no national fixed rate. Each school sets its own figure, and the range is wide.
To use a live example, the University of Benin opened its acceptance fee portal on Monday 24 August 2026 for the 2026/2027 session. UNIBEN is charging N60,000 for science and non-science students and N80,000 for medical students, with a payment deadline of Monday 10 November 2026. Other schools sit at different points. Some federal universities charge below N40,000. Many state universities sit between N20,000 and N80,000. Private universities often go higher. The only figure that matters to you is the one on your own school’s official portal, so check it there and nowhere else.
Paying the School Is Not the Same as Accepting on CAPS
This is the mistake that quietly kills admissions every single year.
There are two separate acceptances. One happens on your school portal, where you pay the acceptance fee. The other happens on JAMB CAPS, where you click Accept on the admission offer. They are different systems, and doing one does not do the other for you.
A candidate can pay N60,000 to the school, resume gallantly, and still have a pending offer sitting on CAPS. If that offer is never accepted, the admission is not regularised with JAMB, and the problem resurfaces years later during NYSC mobilisation.
So treat it as one job with two steps. Pay the acceptance fee on the school portal, then log in and accept the offer on CAPS. How to Pay Without Getting Scammed
Admission season is harvest season for fraudsters, because they know thousands of families are about to move money quickly. The acceptance fee window is exactly where they strike.
The rules are simple and they do not bend:
Pay only through your school’s official portal. The payment usually runs through Remita or a bank gateway linked directly from the portal. Type the school website address yourself instead of clicking links sent to you.
No genuine school collects acceptance fees through a personal bank account, a WhatsApp contact, or an “agent” who promises to help you process it faster. Anybody asking you to transfer to an individual account is a thief, no matter how official the letterhead looks.
Print or save every receipt and the payment confirmation page. You will need them during physical clearance and registration.

What If You Delay or Cannot Pay Yet?
Deadlines here are real. UNIBEN’s runs to 10 November, but some schools give as little as two to four weeks. A school can withdraw a provisional admission where the acceptance fee never arrives, and no amount of begging reopens a closed portal.
If the money is not ready, act early rather than going quiet. Confirm the exact deadline on the portal, tell your sponsors immediately, and prioritise this payment over resumption shopping. The fee secures the seat; everything else can wait a few weeks.
One caution on funding: student loan support is generally tied to tuition and institutional charges after you are registered, so do not plan to pay an acceptance fee with money that has not landed. Your Quick Acceptance Checklist
Once your name appears on an admission list, work through this in order:
1. Confirm the offer on JAMB CAPS through the official JAMB portal, not a forwarded link.
2. Check your school portal for the acceptance fee amount and deadline.
3. Pay through the official portal only, and save every receipt.
4. Go back to CAPS and click Accept on the offer.
5. Screenshot everything: the CAPS acceptance, the payment confirmation, the admission letter.
