The question has come in three different ways since Saturday. A father whose son is 15 and scored 298. A mother whose daughter turns 16 in November and scored 331. An aunt who simply wrote, “JAMB has released underage results, so does that mean she is in?”
The honest answer to all three is the same. The result is out. The admission is not. And for most underage candidates, it will not be, whatever the score says.
This post explains what the JAMB underage results released on 5 September 2026 actually are, what the 320 rule is, the four gates that sit behind it, and what to do if your child does not clear them.
Who counts as underage
JAMB defines an underage candidate for the 2026 admission exercise as anyone who will be younger than 16 on 30 September 2026. Not on the day of the exam, not on the day the result came out. On 30 September.
So a candidate who turns 16 on 20 September is not underage. A candidate who turns 16 on 5 October is. The difference between those two children is two weeks, and for this year it is the difference between a normal admission process and the exceptional one described below.
What the JAMB underage results are, and what they are not
On Saturday 5 September, the Board’s Public Communication Adviser, Dr Fabian Benjamin, announced that the 2026 UTME results of underage candidates had been released for viewing. The full statement was reported by Vanguard and by most national papers the same day. The wording matters. For viewing.
The statement said the results were released mainly so that candidates and their parents could see how they performed. It then said, in plain terms, that the results cannot be used for admission or any other official purpose, except for candidates who meet the requirements for exceptionally performing underage candidates.
In other words, an underage candidate who scored 250 now knows their score. That is all they have. It is not an admission ticket, and JAMB has asked such candidates not to present the result to any institution or any individual to try and get one.
How to check the JAMB underage results
Send the word RESULT by SMS to 55019 or 66019. It must go from the same SIM card used to register for the UTME. If that line is lost or damaged, the fix is a JAMB profile recovery, not a friend’s phone, and our JAMB profile recovery guide walks through it.
The 320 rule, and the four gates behind it
Most of what is circulating on WhatsApp stops at “320 and above gets in”. That is not what JAMB said. According to the Board itself, 320 is the first gate of four.
Gate one: 320 in the UTME
The candidate must have scored at least 320 out of 400. Below that, the exceptional route is closed, full stop. A 319 does not round up.
Gate two: 80 per cent in the relevant SSCE subjects
The candidate must also show at least 80 per cent performance in the relevant Senior Secondary School Certificate subjects, where applicable. This is why JAMB has said the process cannot be concluded yet. NECO results are still awaited, and the Board has said it will not close the final stage until candidates waiting on NECO can present them for verification. WAEC candidates with results in hand are not ahead in the queue; everyone waits for the same final date.
Gate three: the school’s own post UTME standard
Every candidate still has to meet the post UTME requirement of the institution they chose. Universities set their own screening rules and their own cut off points, and an exceptional candidate is not excused from them. Gate four: a final assessment by experts
The last stage is a prescribed final assessment by experts, run by JAMB, to separate candidates who are genuinely exceptional from those who simply had a good exam day. JAMB will fix and announce the date for this once NECO results are out. Until that assessment is done, nobody underage has been admitted through this route for 2026, no matter what a school portal or an agent says.
Four gates, in order. A candidate who clears one and two but falls at three or four is not admitted. That is the part most parents have not been told.
What this means if your child scored under 320
It means they wait a year, and that is not the disaster it feels like this week. The JAMB underage results tell you where the child stands, not where the story ends.
A 15 year old with a 290 is a strong candidate who will be a stronger one at 16, with a full SSCE result, a year of maturity, and a second attempt at the UTME where the questions hold no surprises. The cut off marks that matter for the 2027 cycle will be published next year, and the child who used this year well arrives at them prepared rather than panicked.
What you should not do is shop the result around. JAMB has been direct about this: candidates who do not meet the exceptional conditions should not present their result to any institution or person for admission. What this means if your child scored 320 or above
It means you are in the process, not at the end of it. Three things to do now.
First, gather the SSCE evidence. If the result is WAEC, have the scratch card and the printout ready. If it is NECO, watch for the release and be ready to verify immediately.
Second, prepare for post UTME as if the exceptional route did not exist, because gate three is the same screening every other candidate faces.
Third, watch JAMB’s own channels for the final assessment date. Not a blog, not a group admin. The Board has said it will announce the date itself once NECO results are released.
The people who will call you this month
JAMB used the release to warn parents against anyone claiming they can secure admission for an underage candidate outside the prescribed process. That warning exists because those people are already active.
There is no side door. There is no fee that adds points, no connection that skips the expert assessment, no school that can admit an underage candidate outside this route and have it survive matriculation.
